Donate Now to Holiday Meals on Wheels

Most of us know how important Meals on Wheels is. It’s a safety net for vulnerable, homebound seniors. It brings hot food and a warm smile to their doorstep–making sure they have something to eat, someone to talk to and someone to check in on them every weekday. It’s a critical service, providing not only a meal but that human connection that all of us need so much. Many of these seniors live alone, and the volunteer who comes to the door may be the only person they see that day.

What many people don’t know, is that while government funding helps support Meals on Wheels deliveries on the weekdays, it does not provide any funding for deliveries on the holidays. AgeWays must reach out to generous donors like you to help us fund Meals on Wheels deliveries on the holidays in the six-county region of southeast Michigan that we serve (Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties.)

Your donation helps ensure that a hot, festive, special meal and a friendly volunteer will be at the door on those special days to bring the joy of the holidays and help seniors feel connected and cared for. Holiday meals are delivered on Thanksgiving Day, Hanukkah, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Passover and Easter. A gift of $7 will help provide a meal for one senior. Your gift of $50 will bring a holiday meal to the door of seven seniors in your community. Over 8,000 meals are needed this holiday season–from Thanksgiving through the spring holidays of Easter and Passover.

Ursula’s Story

For many homebound seniors, like Ursula, the holidays can be harder, especially if they are alone. Ursala, 83, has lived in her home and in her neighborhood for over 50 years. It’s where she’s worked, raised her daughter and helped her neighbors. But now she’s alone. She’s lost her husband, and her only daughter lives out of town. A severe back injury has left her homebound and Ursula depends on a few close friends and her Meals on Wheels delivery. “I don’t know what I would do without it,” she says.

We depend on donations from people like you to make sure homebound seniors, like Ursula, are not hungry or alone on the holidays.
