Heat Warnings Issued: List of Cooling Centers

CaregiverIdeas and Advice When Caring For a Parent or Loved OnePress Release

Dangerous heat is moving into Michigan next week. Temperatures are expected to move into the upper 90’s in southeast Michigan from Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21.

We are urging older adults to take precautions to keep themselves safe, and we are urging people to check on older friends, family, and neighbors — especially those who do not have air conditioning. If your older loved one does not have air conditioning, think about making a plan together for staying cool. There are cooling centers across the area. Download the full list of cooling centers in Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties. More detailed  information can be found in the county-by-county list of cooling centers at the end of this page.

Some tips for staying safe in the heat:

  • Stay indoors (ideally in an air-conditioned environment)
  • If your cooling plan includes using a fan, remember that fans are effective only if indoor temperatures are less than 90°F. With indoor temperatures above 90°F, a fan can increase body temperature.
  • Drink plenty of water. You’ll need to replace the moisture that you’re losing when you sweat. If you’re caring for an older loved one, encourage them to drink more in the heat, especially if they’re perspiring.
  • Dress for the heat. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Natural fibers like cotton or linen are best.
  • Rest. Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Soak. Take a cool shower or bath to help you cool down.
  • Know the signs of heat illness and be watchful for symptoms both for you and anyone you might be caring for.

Heat Illness Signs and Symptoms:

Heat illness is serious and can even lead to death. See the Heat and Safety Fact Seat from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for more information.

Heat Exhaustion Symptoms:
Seek immediate help if the person throws up, cannot drink, symptoms worsen, or symptoms last more than one hour.

  • Faint or dizzy
  • Excessive sweating
  • Cool, pale, clammy skin
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid pulse
  • Muscle cramps

Heat Stroke Symptoms:
Call 911 right away if you think someone is experiencing heat stroke!

  • Confusion, disorientation
  • Very high body temperature
  • Red, hot skin
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid pulse
  • May lose conscious
