Action Week and Rally Gives Michigan Seniors a Voice

Decisions made in Lansing have a direct and far-reaching impact on the quality of life for seniors in Michigan. Each year, AgeWays  Nonprofit Senior Services participates in Senior Action Week and the Older Michiganian’s Day Rally held on the lawn of the Capitol Building. This very important annual advocacy event helps give seniors a voice and help legislators understand both the needs and the voting power of seniors.

Senior Action Week is a week full of activities, events and advocacy that let advocates understand and lend their support to issues of importance for older adults in Michigan.

What can you do? How can you participate?

Learn more about the platform and the issues critical to seniors in our state. Area Agencies on Aging and other advocates across Michigan have put together a 5-point platform focused on the needs of older adults and those who care for them. You can download and read the entire Senior Action Week Platform. We want legislators to take action to:

• • • Support informal and family caregivers (People who are caring for family members or friends)
    • Support and strengthen the direct care workforce(Those critical workers who help care for vulnerable seniors every day)
    • Support and strengthen the Long-term Care Ombudsman Program (Ombudsmen advocate for residents of licensed long-term care facilities, including nursing homes. The program is understaffed, and we need more ombudsman to help keep nursing home residents safe. Download and read the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Platform)
    • Increase access to home and community-based services(Services like Meals on Wheels, in-home personal care and homemaking.)
    • Expand access to MI Choice (This important program helps gives older adults with adults with disabilities the option of receiving care at home instead of the nursing home.)
