Our Holiday Meals on Wheels Program Brings Hot Meals and Holiday Cheer to the Doors of Homebound Seniors

Meals on Wheels helps make sure homebound seniors have a nutritious meal and a friendly volunteer at the door Monday through Friday. While federal funds help cover the cost of this critical program on the weekdays, there is no government funding to cover the cost of meals on the holidays. We depend on donations from people like you to make sure we can deliver a hot, festive meal and a smiling face to the doors of local seniors on these special days.

Frances (Rosie the Riveter), 102

In her 102 years, Frances has seen quite a bit. She was a Rosie the Riveter during World War II, taking a bus with her two sisters from their Detroit home to Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti to punch bolts into airplane wings. She worked at Chrysler in quality control inspection for decades. She had three children. She was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor this year – and went to collect it in Washington, D.C.

Today, Frances lives in a senior community in a unit that has a sunroom in the front that enables her to look out onto an expansive lawn and the pots of basil she’s planted.

If she could get out and shop for food she would, but a broken hip still has Frances confined to her apartment. She also has a bad knee that makes it difficult to get around.

Signing up for Meals on Wheels five years ago at the suggestion of a neighbor. It was a great decision.

“I look forward to it,” Frances said. “The delivery person always stops and talks.”  She’s friends with one of the drivers on Facebook.

Giving the gift of a hot meal for the holidays helps seniors like Frances remain independent. Your generosity lets them know they are not forgotten.

Give Them the Joy of the Holiday

Your donation to our Holiday Meals on Wheels program will deliver so much more than a meal. It will also bring a caring volunteer to the door of a senior who might otherwise spend the holiday hungry or alone. It’s someone to wish that senior a happy holiday and make sure they know they’re not forgotten.

Your Donation Stays Local and Helps Seniors in Your Neighborhood

  • We serve six counties in southeast Michigan (Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties).
  • We work with 13 contract providers on a local level. Your gift will stay local and help seniors in your community.

Over 8,000 Holiday Meals Are Needed This Season

  • Holiday deliveries happen on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Passover and Easter.
  • (Not all providers deliver on all holidays.)

Let Them Know You Care

We hope you’ll consider giving so that seniors like Sally know you care. Even a small amount can help. Every $7 you give can bring holiday cheer, warmth and joy to the door of a local senior.
