AgeWays Hosts 4.5 CE Conference for Aging, Health Care and Human Service Professionals

Southfield, Mich. (March 4, 2015) — AgeWays will host the Sixth Annual Judith J. Wahlberg Memorial Lecture “Myth Busting Common Concerns about Aging” on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at the Troy Community Center (3179 Livernois Road, Troy, MI 48083). Three expert presentations will address various myths field of aging from programming, direct service delivery and policy perspectives. Health care, human service and aging professionals can register to attend and earn continuing education credits at www.jjw2015.eventbrite.com.
The morning presentation will commence with “Community Programs for Older Adults: Are We Making a Difference OR An Impact?” by Cathleen Connell, PhD, Chair and Professor of the Department of Health Behaviors and Health Education, School of Public Health, University of Michigan. Dr. Connell will focus on how participation in community based programs can contribute to successful aging and quality of life. She will discuss a framework for planning and evaluating programs, with an emphasis on health behavior change and chronic disease management programs. She will also explore the challenges of a “one-size-fits all” approach to programs, and share strategies for recruiting, retaining and motivating program participants.
Joanna LaFleur, recreational therapist and owner of Dementia Specialists Homecare, will provide a brief overview of the types of dementia and the dementia bill of rights during her presentation “People with Dementia CAN have a Quality of Life.” LaFleur will discuss the abilities of clients with dementia and how theses abilities can maintain quality of life. She will explain how recreational therapy has a positive effect and can be used while caring for those with dementia, and the difference between therapeutic and diversional activities and therapeutic activities that work for those with dementia.
After lunch, the conference will culminate with “Myth Busting the Fears of Social Security and Medicare Insolvency,” a presentation by Jim Luke, MBA, MS, Professor of Economics, Lansing
Community College. Jim will identify the macro-economic and social benefits of inter-generational transfer programs such as Social Security and Medicare. He will explain the economic prospects and
solvency of the Medicare and Social Security funding mechanisms for the next generation, and the impacts on national healthcare spending and the federal budget.

Continuing education credits are available in Nursing Home Administration, Social Work and Senior Centers. The cost to attend with CE’s is $45. General admission is $35. Student rate is $25.
