A Safe Place for a Loved One When You Can’t Be There

Adult day service centers offer weekday care for older adults who cannot be left alone due to dementia or other conditions that make independent living unsafe. These programs are lifelines for caregivers—providing much-needed respite—and enriching spaces for older adults to socialize, participate in engaging activities, and enjoy a daily routine.

A Day in the Life: Jean’s Story

Jean, 85, lives with her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Ed. Like many families, they struggled when adult day programs shut down during the pandemic. “I felt very trapped,” Lisa recalls. “Without SarahCare, I probably would have put her in a memory care facility.”

Thankfully, Jean now attends SarahCare – Lakeside in Sterling Heights, one of the programs supported by AgeWays. There, she enjoys crafts, music, lunch with friends, and a renewed sense of joy. Lisa says the difference is night and day: “SarahCare gives her stimulation during those six or seven hours. I have space for me each day. To me, it’s this great world.”

What Adult Day Centers Offer

Programs vary, but many centers provide:

  • Structured activities like music, art, games, and movement

  • Meals and snacks (check for additional fees)

  • Transportation, medication reminders/administration, and personal care

  • Social interaction to support emotional and cognitive health

Drop-in services aren’t typical—most centers follow a consistent schedule, whether part-time or full-week attendance. Evening and weekend hours may be available in some locations.

Are These Services Right for Your Loved One?

Adult day centers are ideal for individuals in the early to middle stages of dementia or those with physical limitations. Each center evaluates whether it can meet specific care needs—such as assistance with eating, hygiene, or behavior management—so it’s important to call ahead.

Programs may not be appropriate for individuals with advanced dementia or chronic illness. If you’re unsure, ask the center directly.

The Impact on Caregivers

According to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving, 83% of caregivers reported increased stress since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Adult day services remain one of the most requested forms of support, helping caregivers recharge so they can continue to provide compassionate care at home.

“Adult day programs help both the participant and the caregiver,” says Kristin Wilson, AgeWays’ Manager of Social Services. “That respite can rejuvenate caregivers so they can better care for their loved one.”

Some programs offer reduced fees for families in financial need. Contact the center directly to see if you qualify. The adult day service centers with which AgeWays has a relationship are listed below.
