Adult day service centers provide weekday care for older adults who can’t be left alone due to dementia or other conditions that make independent living unsafe. These programs are lifelines for caregivers—offering respite and peace of mind—while giving older adults a safe, social, and stimulating environment.
According to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving, 83% of caregivers reported increased stress since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Adult day services are one of the most requested supports, helping families rest, work, and recharge while ensuring loved ones receive compassionate care.
“Adult day programs help both the participant and the caregiver,” says Kristin Wilson, AgeWays’ Manager of Social Services. “That respite can rejuvenate caregivers so they can better care for their loved one.”
While services vary by center, most include:
Programs typically follow a consistent schedule—whether part-time or full-week attendance—and some may offer extended hours.
Jean, 85, lives with her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Ed. Like many families, they struggled when adult day programs shut down during the pandemic.
“I felt very trapped,” Lisa recalls. “Without SarahCare, I probably would have put her in a memory care facility.”
Now, Jean attends SarahCare – Lakeside in Sterling Heights, one of the programs supported by AgeWays. She enjoys crafts, music, lunch with friends, and a renewed sense of joy.
“SarahCare gives her stimulation during those six or seven hours,” Lisa says. “I have space for me each day. To me, it’s this great world.”
Adult day programs are ideal for individuals in the early to middle stages of dementia or with physical limitations. Each center will evaluate specific care needs such as help with eating, hygiene, or behavioral support. If your loved one has advanced dementia or complex medical needs, call ahead to discuss options and determine the best fit. Some programs also offer reduced fees for families with financial need.
