Help family members caring for loved ones get the support they need
Our Caregiver Coaching program provides one-on-one, personal support for people who are caring for an aging or chronically ill family member or friend. Our volunteers help caregivers find resources, work through problems, and get the support they need. Our coaches can play many different roles—they can be guides, researchers, cheerleaders, sounding boards and listeners.
It is work that matters. Family caregivers are a lifeline for the seniors that they care for. Caregiving can be joyful and rewarding, put it can sometimes be frustrating and exhausting too, and there isn’t enough support for family caregivers. They often struggle alone, not knowing where to turn or whom to turn to for guidance and support.
We’re looking for people from varied backgrounds willing to spend a few hours a week connecting with family caregivers in their community. You don’t need to have any particular skill or background beyond a willingness to listen and help. If you have experience caring for a loved one, that’s a bonus, but it’s not required.
It’s work that’s rewarding. You’ll get the satisfaction of knowing you’re not only impacting the caregivers you work with directly but also the older adults and people with disabilities that they care for.
It starts with filling out a Caregiver Coaching Volunteer Application. It takes about 20 minutes and will give us an idea about your background, availability and preferences. If you’re not quite ready to apply and would just like to learn more, fill out our Interest Form, and we’ll give you a call.
We spend time getting to know our new volunteers and helping them understand the needs of caregivers, the resources available, and how the coaching process works. All of our new coaches receive training before they are ever matched with a caregiver. We will continue to support you with monthly coach meetings and learning. You’ll be able to connect with our program coordinator whenever you have a question or need help.
When matching you with a caregiver, we keep your preferences and personality in mind. You and the caregiver you’re matched with will work together to figure out a rhythm—how often you’ll communicate, what type of communication works for you, and what kind of support they need. Every caregiver situation is unique. There is no set schedule or curriculum. You can meet as often or as little as the caregiver needs. You might be helping them find resources, helping them sort through options, or just listening.
