Utility Assistance
- The emergency fuel assistance program assists older adults with payment of heating bills. Also administers The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) which provides assistance with heat, electric or water bills.
- Must be a resident of Monroe County and have income at or below 150% of the poverty level.
Friendly Callers
In-Home Respite
- Volunteer Caregiver Program provides in home respite, friendly visiting and meal preparation. Commission On Aging (COA) home care program offers housekeeping, meal prep, personal care and respite services to older adults that meet income guidelines. Staff are trained and bonded.
- Caregiver or care receiver must be age 60 or older and a resident of Monroe County. For COA home care program: Must be age 60 or older, a Monroe County resident and meet income guidelines. United Way funding available for persons under 60 that need home care assistance.
Transportation
- Transportation to non-emergency medical appointments and treatments for senior and non-senior Monroe County residents with a disability or a chronic medical condition.
Home Repair & Chores
- Indoor chore services include: Minor home repairs, minor carpentry, electrical and plumbing repairs; cleaning living areas of homes that pose a health risk. May also include roof replacement, furnace replacement, handicap accessibility modifications, and water heater replacement for residents of Erie, Bedford or Frenchtown Townships.
- Outdoor services include: Lawn mowing, Cleaning gutters, Minor carpentry, Snow removal, Minor electrical repairs, Install of window air conditioners.
- Must be age 60 or older, and a resident of Monroe County. Must reside in Erie, Bedford or Frenchtown Townships for roof, furnace or water heater replacements.
Housing Assistance
- The Supportive Housing Program (SHP) is a two-year rental program designed to help homeless and disabled individuals become self-sufficient. SHP is a scattered site housing, meaning that once chosen for the program clients are able to choose their own housing.
- Must be homeless, medically disabled and a Monroe County resident.
Food Vouchers
- Senior Project Fresh provides eligible seniors with $25 in coupons to purchase unprocessed, Michigan-grown produce from local Farmers Markets between June 1st and October 31st of each year.
- Must be age 60 or older. Disabled persons age 18 or older who live in senior housing may also be eligible. Total household income must not exceed 185% of poverty.
Food Pantries
- MCOP works with Gleaner’s and Feeding America to offer several food programs. The Emergency Food Assistance Program supplies food on a quarterly basis to low-income individuals and families at sites throughout Monroe County. The County-wide Food Bank coordinates a network of food pantry locations in Monroe County. The Emergency Food Box Program is a one-time emergency offering for low-income residents in need. The Lord’s Harvest Pantry offers a client choice pantry that residents in need may utilize up to 6 times per year. A mobile Food Pantry is also offered at various locations throughout the year.
